There are many reasons to explain why music lessons matter. I could write about how it develops students physically with hand-eye coordination. But much has been written about that. I could write about how music lessons bring about more emotional connection and understanding. But much has been written about that as well. I could write about how music is a language and learning the language of music develops the brain. Or many other topics. But for this post, I’m going to focus on one thing. Self-confidence.

Confidence is important and necessary in life. Whether that’s in school, work or anywhere that we interact with others, doing it confidently helps us. We project confidence in areas that we may not be, or we confidently use our base of knowledge to share, inform and educate others around us.

So how do music lessons build confidence? After teaching music for 23 years now and being a musician for 42, I’ve learned that I can teach the skills to be a musician, but there’s one thing that I cannot teach. Confidence. I can teach ideas and skills that build confidence and can encourage it, but I cannot teach a student to be confident. Confidence comes from repetition and familiarity with the instrument. When you hear beginning musicians, the music is slow, unsteady and choppy. As students progress in learning, you hear improvement and growth in their musical abilities and the sounds they make on the instrument.

As a teacher, I’ve learned to teach skills that build confidence in students. That’s not always based on the piece of music they’re working on. Building up the skills, knowledge base and independence, along with reflecting on the music they make are steps to build confidence.
