As you’re looking for a music teacher in Spring, TX, and your search brings you to Harmanny Music Education, you may wonder, “So… when did Harmanny Music Education start?” — you’re not alone.

And the honest answer?

It’s complicated.

🎹 Where It All Began

My very first piano student was back when I was still in high school.
I had absolutely no idea what I was doing—and, unsurprisingly, that first attempt only lasted a few months.

Fast forward to 2002.

I was one year out of college, trying to figure out life after spending five years pursuing a career path that didn’t work out the way I had planned. I needed income, so I started teaching lessons again.

And somewhere along the way… something clicked.

I realized I actually loved teaching private lessons.

🎶 From Side Hustle to Full-Time Leap

As a church musician, I loved what I did—but financially, it wasn’t enough on its own. Teaching lessons became a consistent side income.

Then in 2006, everything shifted.

After a church position was cut, I made a bold decision:

“What the heck—let’s try teaching full-time.”

At the time, we didn’t have kids, which made the leap a little less risky. But it was still a huge learning experience—figuring out how to build something sustainable while growing as a teacher.

🎼 The Birth of “Harmanny”

In 2008, we moved to San Antonio. Somewhere along the journey, the name Harmanny Music was born.

It just made sense:

  • My last name is Harmann
  • Music is all about harmony

So… Harmanny.

Simple. Personal. Musical.

🎵 A Calling That Wouldn’t Go Away

In 2014, we moved to the Houston area, and I was ready to take a break from teaching.

But that didn’t last long.

On my very first Sunday at a new church, I saw a prayer request card that said:

“Will Mr. Harmann be offering music lessons?”

I laughed. Out loud.

Because apparently… this wasn’t something I was supposed to walk away from.

So I didn’t.

Instead, I did both:

  • Worked full-time in my church role
  • Taught private lessons from home
  • Ran a music academy through the church

🎹 2020: The Turning Point

In January 2020 (yes… right before the world changed), I made another big decision.

I stepped away from my full-time church position.

At the time, I wasn’t sure what was next:

  • Go back into classroom teaching?
  • Build a full-time lesson studio?
  • Try something completely different?

For a season, I did a bit of everything:

  • Taught in the classroom
  • Delivered DoorDash to help make ends meet
  • Continued teaching lessons

And through all of that, one thing became clear:

Teaching lessons wasn’t just something I did—it was what I was meant to do.
