Growing up as a pastor’s kid, this hymn was one of many that was an integral part of my childhood. It’s a text written by St. Germanus, who lived in the late 300’s. It was translated into English by John Mason Neale, and added to the tune “Es Ist Ein Ros”, which is usually sung with “Lo, How a Rose is Blooming”. One of my favorite Christmas related groups that I stumbled on a few years ago, Folk Angel, does a really unique and creative take on the song.
