In the months of November and December, music releases are typically left to Christmas and Holiday releases. But today, November 15th, has been a day I’ve been looking forward to. Jon Batiste’s release of “Beethoven Blues”, where he has taken Beethoven’s works and added jazz, blues and his own creativity to it. I’ve written about his first two released songs from the album here and here.
There will no doubt be controversy over this as many in the classical music and piano world hold on tightly to traditions and the music composed by the icons of music. Personally, I’m all for tradition, but I want to see creativity. How many times can you hear a similar interpretation of “Moonlight Sonata” or “Fur Elise” or “Ode to Joy”? So why not see what a fusion of Beethoven and the blues could be?
Jon Batiste is no hack when it comes to music. His family is well known in New Orleans for their musical ability. He started playing percussion and drums in his family’s band at the age of 8! He took classical piano lessons, and in middle and high school, transcribed music from videos games. That’s a strong way to develop your ear! He went to Juilliard, got his bachelors and masters degree from the school. He’s composed the score for the Disney movie “Soul” and been was the house band leader for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” among many other accolades. His musical ability, experience and creativity is easy to spot!
The music is excellently crafted. Batiste shows off his ability and weaves back and forth between a straight classical interpretation of Beethoven and his own hybrid interpretation, as well as when he’s adding in his own stylings. One of my favorites so far on first listen to the entire album is “Waldstein Wobble” where he takes the Piano Sonata Number 21 (Waldstein) and grafts it together with some boogie woogie. Here’s his version:
This whole album is definitely worth a listen for musicians and music appreciators young and old. And definitely take a look at Jon Batiste and his music as well. He’s one of the more underrated musicians out there at the moment!
